Apartment maintenance is partly about upkeep and partly about documentation

Renters are responsible for different things depending on the lease and local rules. A useful apartment checklist therefore should not pretend every repair is a tenant DIY task. It should help you keep the unit in good condition, notice problems early and document issues that need to be reported.

Track the condition of the unit

At move-in, record visible condition and any existing damage using the process required by your landlord or local rules. Keep dated photos and copies of official inspection documents where appropriate.

Maintain what you are expected to maintain

Routine cleaning, appliance care and consumables may fall partly on the tenant, but the exact responsibility comes from the lease and local requirements. Follow appliance manuals and avoid unauthorized repairs.

Report problems with a clear timeline

For leaks, appliance failures or building issues, keep a simple record of when the problem was noticed, when it was reported and what response occurred. The purpose is clarity, not conflict.

Keep move-out in mind from the beginning

Receipts, communications and condition notes are much easier to organize as you go than in the final week of a lease.
