Household electronics deserve better records than a drawer of boxes

Laptops, tablets, monitors, game consoles, networking devices and smart-home equipment often have serial numbers, warranties and assigned users. They also move between rooms and people over time.

Record identity and ownership

Store model, serial number, purchase date, price if useful, warranty, current household user and location. For company-owned or school-issued devices, keep them clearly separate from personally owned assets.

Do not store passwords in the inventory

The asset record can note which password manager or account owner controls the device, but credentials belong in a dedicated secure system.

Keep purchase and repair history

Battery replacement, screen repair or warranty service can be recorded like any other household asset event.

Add backup status carefully

A simple note such as “backed up to external drive” can be useful, but avoid storing encryption keys or sensitive recovery codes in ordinary household notes.
