A digital home inventory is only as durable as its backup

Local-first storage gives users control, but it also means device failure or cleared browser data can remove the working copy. Backup must therefore be part of the normal product experience.

Export a complete household backup

The app should package structured data with a schema version and integrity checks. If encrypted export is enabled, use standard Web Crypto primitives and require a password the service does not know.

Keep more than one copy

A household can store an encrypted backup in another device, cloud drive, external storage or other location under its control. The exact strategy depends on the sensitivity of the data and the user’s risk tolerance.

Test restore, not only export

A backup that has never been validated is an assumption. The app should preview and validate an import before overwriting data.

Protect the password separately

If the encrypted backup password is lost, the product should not pretend it can recover the file without a recovery mechanism. Be explicit about that tradeoff.

Contextual CTA: Create your first backup soon after setup, then make “last backup date” visible on the dashboard so protection does not depend on memory.
