Household Subscription Cost Calculator

A household rarely has one subscription to worry about — it has a streaming plan billed monthly, cloud storage billed annually, and maybe a weekly meal box, each quoted in a different unit that makes them hard to add up in your head. This calculator puts every one of them on the same footing and totals the result.

How to enter your list, and how it’s calculated

List one subscription per line in the format Name | Amount | frequency, where frequency is weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual (yearly also works). The calculator converts each entry to its annualized cost — multiplying weekly amounts by 52, monthly by 12, and quarterly by 4 — then lists every subscription’s annual figure individually, sums them into a household annual total, and divides that total by 12 to give you a combined monthly-equivalent number.

Worked example

Enter “Streaming | 15.99 | monthly” and “Cloud storage | 29.99 | annual” — the calculator’s own starting example — and the result reads: Streaming $191.88 a year, Cloud storage $29.99 a year, for a combined monthly equivalent of $18.49 and an annual total of $221.87. Add a third line, “Meal box | 45 | weekly,” and that one entry alone adds $2,340 a year — a clear illustration of why a weekly price is worth converting before you compare it against anything billed less often.

What it doesn’t do

The calculator totals whatever you type; it doesn’t pull your subscriptions from a bank statement, categorize them automatically, or flag which ones are “worth it.” If you misspell the frequency word or leave it off a line, that entry is treated as costing nothing annualized, so double-check every row’s frequency matches one of the four supported words before trusting the total. Everything runs in your browser as you type — nothing is sent anywhere to generate the total.

What the total is actually for

An annual number on its own doesn’t tell a household anything to act on. The useful next step is deciding, service by service, whether each one is still worth what it costs — and noting the renewal date for the ones you want to reconsider before the next charge hits, rather than after.

What to save with the total

Keep the date you ran the calculation, since subscription prices change and a six-month-old total can be misleading. For any subscription you flag for review, note its renewal or billing date next to the price you entered here, so the reminder lines up with when a cancellation decision actually matters.

Grouping subscriptions by category yourself

The calculator totals every line together into one household number, but it doesn’t sort entries into categories like streaming, storage, or memberships on its own. If that breakdown matters to you, group your list manually before entering it — list all your streaming services together, run the total, then do the same for storage and memberships separately. Three smaller totals often reveal more than one combined number, especially in a household with several people’s individual subscriptions mixed together.
